Honorary Graduate Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies MBE shared her expertise with students and aspiring elite sports stars at the University of St Mark and St John.
‘An evening with Sharron Davies’ attracted students, and coach loads of sports clubs and school children from across the South West region, from Gloucester to Truro.
She shared the secrets of her success as sportswoman, broadcaster and author, and discussed the launch of Parents4Sport, a new website that supports young people, parents and families who are interested in sport.
The inspiring talk centered around themes of determination and perseverance, citing her favourite quote made popular by Gary Player: “The harder I work, the luckier I get”.
She thanked her family saying: “Without my Mum, giving up nice things like her washing machine and holidays, as well as my Dad, who eventually gave up his job to coach me full time, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
She won a silver medal in the 400-metre individual medley at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, and two gold medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton at the age of 15.
