BBC and University make documentary on Foreign Accent Syndrome

Released: 27.03.13

The University of St Mark & St John (Marjon) is currently working with the BBC on a documentary about Foreign Accent Syndrome with an ex Marjon member of staff, Sarah Colwill who presents with this very rare condition.

The filming is taking place in the University’s Centre for Communication Disability Research with Martin Duckworth, a specialist in the field of forensics and motor speech disorder and Professor Nick Miller who is the acknowledged national expert in Foreign Accent Syndrome. Martin and Professor Miller will be working with Sara.

Sufferers of the syndrome can develop an accent without ever having been exposed to it as it is the change in speech patterns from a brain injury which causes the lengthening of syllables, change in pitch or mispronunciation of sounds.

The hour long documentary is scheduled to be screened in the autumn.
