University of St Mark & St John’s elite sport scholar Ben Proud won 50 metres freestyle gold in 22.14 at the British Gas International Swimming Meet in Manchester.
Commonwealth Games-bound Proud – already British record holder in the men’s 50m freestyle – also helped his club side, Plymouth Leander, to achieve gold in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
The swimming competitions at next month’s 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow start at 10:30 on Thursday July 24 and finish at 21:45 on Tuesday July 29.
Proud’s golden swimming double comes in the same week as rowing world champion Helen Glover – who attended the university for teacher training – won gold in the women’s pairs World Cup meet in France.
Cornwall’s Glover combined with fellow Olympic champion Heather Stanning – for the first time since the pair won gold at London 2012 - to finish first at the Aiguebelette regatta in seven minutes 2.91 seconds, ahead of two strong American pairings.
The third and final rowing World Cup event takes place from July 13-15 in Lucerne before the world championship in the Netherlands between August 24-31.
