The University of St Mark & St John elite sport scholar Ben Proud smashed his own British record to claim gold in the men’s 50 metre butterfly final at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 19-year-old Plymouth Leander swimmer, coached by university honorary graduate and England Swim Team head coach Jon Rudd, set a new Commonwealth Games standard with a remarkable 22.93 sprint finish in his favourite discipline.
Proud barely had time to recover before plunging into the deep end again to anchor England’s 4x100m freestyle relay team to bronze, behind a golden Australian four and silver medallists South Africa.
Proud’s golden 50 fly victory ended England’s wait for their win in the Commonwealth Games pool.
