Marjon and Plymouth YMCA getting young people into work

Released: 15.03.12

Ben Frier was accepted as an apprentice atthe University of St Mark & St John sports centre last year for a 12 month placement, following a successful interview.

Ben gained his lifeguard qualification within 3 weeks of being at Marjon and will soon complete his Level 2 Fitness Instructor course at Plymouth YMCA, which will qualify him to complete gym inductions for new clients.

He will also complete training in first aid, health and safety and a host of other short courses provided by the Marjon and Plymouth YMCA training continuum.

When asked why he applied for an apprenticeship Ben said:

“It has been brilliant, it kick starts my career, I get paid to learn and gain qualifications to make me more employable.”

Sports Centre Manager Simon White said:

“We offer two apprenticeships per year here and the young people who take them up always go on to be successful in the sports and recreation industry. The scheme is growing with more employers offering places around the City of Plymouth but we would like to see many more.  We are pleased to be partnered with the Plymouth YMCA on delivering this programme and hope to help more young people in the community get into work or improve their skills if they are already in employment.”

For a list of short courses please see this page. To find out more about apprenticeships and health and fitness qualifications, please contact Sharron Agambar at Plymouth YMCA either via email or call (01752) 201918.
