University of St Mark & St John elite sport scholar Ben Proud is set to compete in five swimming events at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 19-year-old Sports Development & Coaching foundation degree student is already a butterfly and freestyle British long course record holder at 50 metres and there are high hopes he will medal for England in Scotland.

London-born Proud is set to represent England in the men’s 50m butterfly and freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay in the Commonwealth Games pool in Glasgow.

Proud’s national and Plymouth Leander swim coach is University of St Mark & St John graduate Jon Rudd.

England Swim Team head coach Rudd, a university honorary graduate, said: “We have done everything we can to give our swimmers, like Ben, the best possible the build-up to these Games.

“Now it’s a question of getting used to life in the Games village – because it is different – and turning all our hard work in training into results in the pool.”
