University of St Mark and St John elite sport scholar Ben Proud is now a double Commonwealth Games champion.

The 19-year-old sprint swimmer from London followed up his record-breaking 50m butterfly gold medal win by speeding to another Glasgow 2014 pool victory in the 50m freestyle final in 21.92.

It was another memorable success for teenage scholar Proud, who set a new Commonwealth record 21.76 in qualifying for the final as fastest semi-final finisher.

Proud’s Glasgow Games medal haul also included bronze following his anchor swim in the 4x100m freestyle relay for Team England.

The university student is coached by alumni and honorary graduate Jon Rudd, the Plymouth Leander and England Swim Team head coach.

Proud’s next target is to take on the best the continent has to offer when he competes in the 32nd LEN European Swimming Championships 2014 in Berlin from August 13-24.

In the meantime he praised his coaches and the University of St Mark & St John in a post-victory press conference before leaving Glasgow, reported by Plymouth Herald sports editor Sara Raine
