Ben Proud has come second in the world for the fastest 50m butterfly.

Elite swimmer Proud, who studies a Sports Development & Coaching degree at the University, was star of the day at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Long Course Swimming Championships.

Proud smashed his record with a time of 23.63. He now ranks second in the world behind Florent Manaudou, who posted a 23.49 earlier this year.

The swimmer won The Herald Sports Personality of the Year 2014. Under the wing of Coach of the Year Jon Rudd, Proud took to the world stage to become double Commonwealth Games champion.

At the Glasgow games, he won his first senior international medals, becoming Commonwealth Games champion at 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly. He then added a 50m butterfly bronze and 4x100m medley relay gold for Britain at his first European Championships.
