Released: 13.02.13

Students at Marjon (soon to be the University of St Mark & St John) are set to stage a university Mars Just Play Festival, the largest of its kind in the country. The event, on March 17, is set to attract up to 400 participants from all over the South West, which will include students from universities and local FE colleges The event is being organised by Event Management students as part of their degree, in conjunction with the Devon FA Get into Football programme.

Entries are currently being taken for the Mars ‘Just Play’ Festival, a free football extravaganza, from those aged 16 or older and can be made by emailing  We are looking for teams of either 5 (males), 7 (male) or 3 (females) plus substitutes. You do not need to register everyone’s name straight away, we just need your school or institutions name along with contact details.

Participants will be able to take part in free Street Soccer sessions with FIFA Street’s Flave (Darren Laver), and competitions in both futsal, small sided football and a female 3 v 3 tournament.

Chris French, Get into Football Officer, Devon FA said “The FA Mars Just Play sessions in Plymouth have been hugely successful over the past 12 months and with this festival we are aiming to encourage more players back into the game. “Targeting HE and FE students with this FREE festival and Street Soccer event will provide us with opportunities to encourage them to join local clubs and leagues”

With sport being one of Marjon’s specialisms, Marjon is the perfect location for this large event.

Ryan Thomas, Marjon Programme Leader commented “I’m delighted that the Devon FA’s Get into Football project have chosen to engage with our Marjon students to not only run this event, but plan and design it too.  The chance to undertake ‘real’ learning opportunities in the community are vital to our event/sports related students, and help them to hit the ground running when they graduate.  I’m sure the Just Play Festival will prove to be a really good day!”

The event is a collaboration of the University of Plymouth, British University and Colleges Sports (BUCS), FA Mars Just Play and the Devon FA.
