Jack Pack singing star Martin John McCafferty says he will miss his friends at the University of St Mark & St John as he defers studies to pursue his soaring musical career.
The talented 32-year-old Derry-born crooner has joined Jack Pack, the swing group who have just signed for Simon Cowell’s Syco label after wowing the music mogul during the latest Britain’s Got Talent series.
Martin John – who has completed two years studying on the university’s primary education course – said: “With the great news that Jack Pack have signed for the Syco label I have decided to pursue my musical career and hopefully that is going to be a success.
“I can’t speak highly enough of everyone at the university – especially my friends there, who I will miss.
“I chose the university because of its reputation for primary teaching and sport.
“I have enjoyed some great times at the university and made good friends there through being involved in a lot of the events they put on.
“I am going to try and pop back to the university when I get the opportunity but first I have got commitments with Jack Pack.”
Talented all-rounder Martin John has also appeared in the Game of Thrones TV series.
Dean of the Faculty of Education & Social Sciences Dr Ian Luke said Martin John made a memorable impression at the university.
Ian said: “Martin John is a talented and charismatic individual. He performed at the Celebration of University Title and also at the leavers’ dinner and was well received. He is clearly passionate about music and an excellent singer.
“Every student at the University of St Mark & St John is actively encouraged to pursue additional interests.
“We are very proud of the positive contribution our students make through volunteering and enrichment activities.”
Student Union president Dan Whitby said: “We all knew Martin John was really talented but he was also an active member of the student community.
“He sang at various events and played rugby for the university, which shows you that he really embraced the student lifestyle.
“He was also a judge at the university’s Got Talent competition – which is quite funny when you think about it.”
