University of St Mark & St John students are at the heart of an exciting collaboration between the University, Her Majesty’s Prison (Dartmoor) and Weston College, delivering educational opportunities to offenders.
The first and second year students on the BA (Hons) Education Studies are delivering a range of educational sessions such as one-to-one support on numeracy and literacy. These programmes are intended to support offenders in understanding and moderating their behaviour. They are asked to consider the impact of their offending behaviour, not simply on themselves and society, but on their own immediate families.
Zenna Kingdon, Senior Lecturer at the University of St Mark & St John said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for our students to gain first-hand experience of working with offenders. A number of students particularly on our BA (Hons) Special Educational Needs degree feel that this may be where their career path lies. This experience is preparing them for graduate employment.”
Robert Davis, HMP Dartmoor said:
“This is a worthwhile venture which will be of great benefit to our organisations and I look forward to taking this further as time goes on”.
The University is working on a further placement for year 3 students which will commence in September.
