Research Background:

1992 PhD (University of Lancaster) Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language.Thesis title: ‘Critical Moments in the Second Language Classroom: Towards an Understanding of Second Language Classroom Culture’.

1997-1998 Classroom Action Research Project. Consultant to EU-funded project in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Finland and Portugal . Designed and ran two courses in Plymouth for participating teachers. Contribution to project publications.

1998-2000 English Language Teaching Improvement Project ( Bangladesh ). Consultant on impact assessment. Collaborated with Bangladeshi and UK-appointed consultants on research-based impact assessment of this DFID-funded project.

  • Educational Processes in the Classroom: Investigation of classrooms, in particular the relationships between educational discourses and classroom life.
  • Professional Development of Teacher Educators & Teachers: Investigation of professional development processes, in particular the impact of teacher education on professional learning and the transfer of knowledge and skills both for individuals and across different contexts.

Among Tony’s responsibilities in the Centre of International Education are leadership and teaching on the Postgraduate programme (MEd/PGDip/PGCert), supervision of PhD research students and contributions to various teacher and trainer development programmes at College and overseas. Tony also leads on initiatives which incorporate ICT in teaching and learning.Tony has lived and worked in Malawi , Sudan , Cameroon , Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as working on projects in Africa (Ethiopia , Swaziland , Namibia and Zambia ), Asia (Malaysia , Pakistan and Bangladesh ), Latin America (Mexico and Costa Rica ) and Europe (Hungary and Romania ) since joining Marjon in 1991.His current overseas work includes participation in an MEd programme in Mexico and consultancy work and teaching on various initiatives in Malaysia and Pakistan . He also speaks regularly at international conferences , most recently in  Malaysia (Penang English Language Learning and Teaching Association 2005, IATEFL 2005, MEXTESOL 2005, INGED Turkey 2006, PELLTA, Malaysia; Aga Khan University, Pakistan; AzETA, Azerbaijan 2007).
