Sharon Sandercock is an International Conference Manager for gasworld.com, an international magazine for the industrial gases industry.

Sharon graduated from Marjon in 2007, with a BA Hons Public Relations and Media Studies.  She lives in St Austell.

Sharon’s answers to the questionnaire are below:

Why did you go on to higher education?
To enter the industry I so longed to be in.

Why did you choose your degree subject?
Because I worked in PR and wanted to forward my knowledge.

Best and worse things about university.
Student debt was the worse thing, and best was the experience gained, the friends I made and the doors that it opened for me.

Describe your current role.
I am the conference manager for gasworld. I organize three international conferences a year. The first was in Dubai where I had 180 delegates from 32 countries, 20 sponsors and a lot of media to handle!  I am currently organising a conference for South Africa which will lead in organising a conference in South America. My job includes;  PR, Marketing Campaigns, Corporate Communication, dealing with press, managing budget and of course travelling!

How did your time at Marjon help your career?
My time at Marjon helped considerably. Without my degree I could have not done my job. Learning about theories, strategies and marketing tools all help in the every day’s aspects of my job. Deadlines that we had to meet at university, has helped me be the organized and planed person that I am today.

What’s the professional achievement you’ve been most proud of since graduating?
This was my first conference in Dubai. It was so rewarding, we never expected so many people to attend and never anticipated the amount of media coverage it gained. It went like clock work- nothing went wrong which is a rarity in event management and organization. Being interviewed on BBC radio was quite a proud moment.

What personal achievement are you most proud of?
Getting through my degree and not failing any pieces of work. Academic work was hard for me as I am a hand’s on person. Completing a degree while doing voluntary work in a PR consultancy, while also holding a part time job was an achievement in its own.

What are your main hobbies or interests?
Travelling, socializing, reading, running.

What are your plans for the next few years (career-wise and other if relevant)?
Climbing up the career ladder and gaining a few more events and conferences under my belt before starting my own international event management consultancy.
