Recommended preparation for interview

In order to prepare for the interview, all applicants for Physical Education are asked to: 

1. access /read the National Curriculum for Physical Education available from http://curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/

2. Become familiar with the Association for Physical Education website, www.afpe.org.uk

As part of the practical, interview applicants are asked to present and manage a short practical teaching episode (15 minutes).  This should focus on a FUNdamental movement skill.  This skill should relate to an activity which may be taught as part of  Key Stage 3 Physical Education.  The 15 minute session should show evidence of progression of the skill and will be delivered to a maximum of 5 participants (other PGCE candidates).  This practical teaching episode should be accompanied by written planning sheet (no longer that one side of A4) which is to be handed to the interviewing tutor.

Applicants will also be asked to discuss a set article in an informal way with the interviewers.  This will be made available for you to read during the day.  The article is entitled ‘The winning streak’ written by Jeremy Sutcliffe, published in the Times Educational Supplement 13^th August 2010 or you may wish to access the article earlier from www.tes.co.uk

Literacy Assessment

In order to assess their command of

• written Standard English and reading
• spoken Standard English

all candidates undertake a literacy assessment during the interview as follows:

• Applicants are asked to read a short article from a national newspaper on an educational topic and respond to this in writing
• Applicants are given a pupil’s written response and asked to identify any errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar
