BA (Hons) Community Practice
Introduction
Out of 108 institutions, UCP Marjon ranked 11th for overall student satisfaction and top 10 for teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support and organisation and management in the 2009 National Student Survey. These results are for the Social Work subject area which includes this course.
This programme offers you an exciting and challenging opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a contemporary community practitioner. This programme responds to national policy which focuses on the need for all public sector organisations to work together in partnership to improve, for example health, education and the environment. Working from a social scientific basis you will explore major issues in society using the principles of community development to underpin the learning. You will be encouraged to develop understanding of social and policy landscapes as well as developing your own perspectives in this exciting area.

1st year overview
Modules analyse key concepts and perspectives in social welfare and social science to develop an understanding of social structure and key factors in social change. You will also study anti-discriminatory practice and interpersonal communication skills, as well as examine your contribution to community development, and explore the value and ethical perspectives relevant to professional formation for community practice.
2nd year overview
Modules provide you with an understanding of how regeneration and community policy inform the work of a whole range of community practitioners. You can undertake a placement in a Community Practice setting and will be taught practitioner research skills. Community Practice has a range of optional modules, examples are Interprofessional Practice and group work.
3rd year overview
You will continue with optional modules pursuing particular areas of interest, including:

• Feminism: Community and Social Welfare
• Disability
• Changing Welfare: Information Advice and Guidance
• ‘Race’, Racism and Anti-racism
• Community Psychology
• Global Youth and Community Work
• Managing People
You will also complete a dissertation to demonstrate understanding of Community Practice perspectives.
