UCP Marjon outperformed all other South West institutions with over 93% of its graduates either in employment or continuing in higher education.  In addition to other South West universities, this percentage also means that UCP Marjon are in the top 20 institutions throughout England for graduate employability.

BA (Hons) Community Work

Introduction

Community work plays a vital role in the development of active and sustainable communities based on social justice and collective action. This programme offers the learning opportunities to work as an effective and capable community worker.

Out of 108 institutions, UCP Marjon ranked 11th for overall student satisfaction and top 10 for teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support and organisation and management in the 2009 National Student Survey, for the Social Work subject area.

The course gives you an understanding of the theory and practice of Community Work. The course is of particular interest to people from diverse educational backgrounds who have engaged in community-based voluntary work. Successful applicants will be committed to issues of social justice, anti-discriminatory practice and empowerment of others. Community workers are involved in education for transformational change.

Entry Requirements

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 180 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome.

Module Information

Year 1
During this year you will explore many of the different perspectives which attempt to make sense of society and the notion of community. Studying areas such as social policy, inequalities and communication you will develop your understanding of social structures, processes and change. You will undertake a part time placement enabling you to integrate theory and practice. Exploring different perspectives and developing an understanding of your values and position in relation to the different perspectives is a key aim of this year.

Year 2
Through a range of modules you will develop on the learning in year 1, exploring the relationship between theory, policy and practice. You will have the opportunity to explore more specific areas of work such as management, community policy and working with groups. You will also work in the field in a full time placement for 12 weeks.

Year 3
You will choose from a variety of specialist modules to develop areas of interest. You will also develop an extended piece of research (supervised dissertation) which enables you to explore an area in depth; this will be supported by your learning in a research module.

Community Workers forge a diverse range of careers including: local government housing and regeneration departments, leisure and social services as well as voluntary sector and neighbourhood centre work. Specialist areas of work include anti-racism and women’s groups. Community work and community development are crucial to a range of government initiatives which require the involvement of local people in sustainable community development.
