Graduate Teacher Programme
Introduction
This programme is designed as an employment-based route into teaching. It enables you to train to teach while working in the employment of a school on a programme tailored to meet your individual needs.
The Primary programme prepares you to teach either across Foundation Stage, key stage 1 or key stage 2. It allows you to build on your previous experiences. The Secondary programme prepares you to teach across the age range from 11 to 16 (key stages 3 and 4) or 11 - 16 with enhancement, this is with some post 16 experience. The programme is obviously dependent on the age range of your main school.
You will need to secure the support of a school; this generally has to be one our designated Partnership schools willing to train / employ you before submitting an application. It is not advisable for you to approach schools where you have a member of your family working, where you have dependents attending, or where you attended school as a child. Schools in 'Special Measures and 'Referral Units' do not employ GTP trainees. GTP training cannot be undertaken within Special Schools; however they can provide your training as a Second School Placement.
In the school you are treated as an employee, but will also receive extensive training (a minimum of 60 days). You will be expected to attend training sessions on a regular basis at the University College. You will also need to undertake training in a second school for a minimum of 20 days. During your training you will be supported by School Based Trainers and University College Trainers.
The application process for the 2012 intake is now open. Please refer to the TDA website http://www.tda.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/teacher-training-options/gtp/provider.aspx?provider_id=95&referer_url=%2fget-into-teaching%2fteacher-training-options%2fgtp%2fsearch+results.aspx%3fitems_per_page%3d10%26start_item%3d0%26distance%3d10%26location%3dplymouth%26phase%3d1%26search_type%3d2&referer_title=search%20results
You will also need to contact your referees and ask them to complete the reference from below and return to the GTP Administrator.
We will be offering Primary GTP, and for Secondary the subjects are English, Geography, MFL, Maths, PE, RE and Science. Your supporting school will need to apply through Marjon, please refer them to the School Information and Application Pack available on this page. Applications without a school will not be considered. The closing date is 31st March 2012.
Please note: In general this route is designed for candidates who have significant school experience and maturity. You need to have worked with children (often as a Teaching Assistant/Higher Level Teaching Assistant) and young people in other capacities. You will need to have an understanding of the primary/secondary curriculum and classroom. You will need to be confident and self-motivated in managing your own development.

Additional Information
Interview:
There is considerable competition for training places on the GTP programme, so you need to take great care with your application and in particular ensure you have suitable school experience. Selection for a GTP place will be made from applicants who are being supported by our existing Partnership schools in Initial Teacher Training (ITT).
All applicants eligible for acceptance on the programme will be invited to attend an interview. You will be asked to complete a short literacy test (which is a requirement for entry on all ITT courses). You will undertake subject knowledge audits, to aid your subject knowledge development once on the programme. You will also take part in an individual and group interview with representatives from schools and the University College. You will be expected to know about current events in education and be prepared to answer questions regarding why are you interested in becoming a teacher and your understanding of the primary or secondary classroom. Interviews are carried out by your supporting schools and this information forms part of your application. It is the University College who makes the final decision.
Quality of training and support:
UCP Marjon will work closely with those schools supporting the training of GTP trainees through a nominated University College trainer who is a Subject or Phase Specialist. The trainer will monitor the training and progress of the trainee as they progress towards the achievement of the Standards and the eventual award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The University College is regarded as a very good ITT provider in relation to its standards for the Management and Quality Assurance (M&QA) of its Initial Teacher Training, gaining a Grade 1 in M&QA in the 2005 Ofsted inspection of its Secondary programme. The quality of our provision in both Secondary and Primary ITT is considered to be good by Ofsted.
The GTP training leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which will enable you to teach in any maintained UK school.
