PGCE Secondary Geography
Introduction
The course will prepare you for the academic requirements of the PGCE and the professional requirements of the Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status. Study/training takes place in both University College and partnership schools across the South West. Most of your teaching will be with the pupils in the 11–16 age range and you may wish to exploit the significant opportunities to work with post 16 students. In both areas of training (at University College and at school), there is extensive focus on subject knowledge, related pedagogy and pupil development/learning.
PGCE Secondary Geography is a very practical course. We develop your classroom craft in a very structured, creative manner, building on the most current thinking in geography teaching and learning.
We use ICT where it is most appropriate to enhance learning in geography. These skills are built up throughout the course to ensure you understand and can apply ICT in the teaching and learning of geography.
The course builds your geography subject knowledge for teaching through practical examples and application of a variety of teaching approaches.
Geography as a subject has the power to change the way we see the world. We will explore how you might develop learning experiences so pupils can really develop their understanding of geography’s key concepts: the meaning of place, the significance of scale (local, regional, national, international, global), sustainable development, interdependence, diversity and interconnectedness.
The course is challenging and intensive whilst being immensely enjoyable. We build a strong culture of support within the group and work on the ethos of collaborative learning.

Module Information
Modules 1 and 2:
General Professional Studies and Applied Subject Studies prepare you to teach across the whole range of the school geography curriculum from 11 to 16 and the core components of A level geography. This involves knowledge of the content, recommended teaching approaches and assessment requirements for the National Strategy and the National Curriculum for geography. We will address how pupils learn, effective teaching strategies and models of pupil progression. There will be a strong focus on enquiry based learning, the processes involved in learning and the use of ICT to promote understanding and the development of pupils as independent learners.
Module 3:
The Practice of Education allows you to apply this learning with pupils in schools, again this is gradually built up over the course with plenty of opportunity for you to build your confidence and reflect upon your practice.

What our students say:
“Geography teaching is a fantastic way to pass on my enthusiasm. I chose UCP Marjon to train because I had family who had trained there and I saw how good it was. It is a great environment to train in and I know that my future is in safe hands.”
Rachel Pownell, PGCE Geography
“I was observed by the Headteacher, he said my lesson was outstanding. I now know that all the training was worth it. I am really enjoying my teaching”.
