Entry Requirements

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome.  An English Language, Literature or other Arts A-level would be useful, but not essential.

Module Information

1st year overview
The programme takes a ‘hands-on’ approach in all years, but year 1 in particular focuses on developing your practical and descriptive skills in the grammar of English. You sample topics you choose from in later years in the Language in the World course and are trained in writing and research. Depending on your pathway, you take courses in ‘speech sounds’, Literature or Education.

2nd year overview
You develop your specialism with advanced modules in your area. All pathways explore conversation and interaction, and develop your grammatical and semantic analysis skills. There are modules in the acquisition and psychology of language, e.g. how some people have restricted language skills. Depending on your pathway, you take Literature, Education or Language Psychology modules.

3rd year overview
Your analytic skills and theoretical knowledge are carried forward into the advanced modules on language testing and assessment, discourse in practice, and the history of English. At this level you are more independent and also design and write up a study for your dissertation, under close supervision. For prospective teachers, often this will  be on an aspect of Language Acquisition. Depending on your pathway, you take Literature and Education modules, a language disorder, or linguistic theory module.
