BSc (Hons) Speech Sciences

Introduction

There are 2.5 million people in the UK who have a communication disorder of some kind, many of whom have a difficulty so severe, that they are not able to communicate with people outside of their immediate family. Speech and language therapists aim to maximise the communication potential of the people with whom they work. While this degree is offered as an alternative to the BSc SLT programme, it contains no practice based placements and does not lead to accredited therapist status. However, there are many postgraduate therapy courses that are HPC Approved and fully funded and there is a growing need for language disorder specialists throughout the education system.

On this programme, half of the modules are from the Linguistics and English Language programme, and half are from the non-placement courses of the SLT programme. The programme is designed to prepare you for a post-graduate SLT course , but you actually spend more time on theoretical knowledge and analytic skills than on the SLT programme. It therefore also gives you greater flexibility in the long term, because you have studied a wider field than a purely vocational degree allows. The programme takes a ‘hands-on’ approach to analysis in all years.
