English Language Teaching

 

1.  Programme Title

English Language Teaching
(MEd/PGDip/PGCert)

2.  Duration

o Full-time:  one year at UCP Marjon (October-September)
o Part-time: up to three years on a modular basis in UCP Marjon in Plymouth ( or for a group in their own country with direct teaching and on-line support).

3.  Entry Requirements

A  1st degree (Bachelor level) and two or more years of relevant experience.  In addition, those applicants whose mother tongue is not English will need to provide evidence of proficiency in the language (e.g. IELTS,  minimum 6.5; iBT 100; TOEFL 570 – written version).  Also, applicants may wish to seek recognition for prior learning or achievement at universities and other HE institutions or approved professional bodies.

5.  Programme Overview

The ELT programme is designed for experienced professionals preparing themselves for leadership roles in ELT programmes, as teachers, managers or advisers.  The programme enables participants to acquire

o Enhanced pedagogic and materials development skills
o Capacities for programme design and management
o Strategic thinking and leadership capacities.

6.  Module Titles

Special field:  Modules (60 credits): 
o Strategies for ELT
o Methodology and Materials for ELT

Core subject Modules (60 credits):  Modules chosen from:
o Approaches to Teaching and Learning;
o Classroom Research; 
o Language Programme Evaluation
o IT in Learning & Teaching
o Subject Studies

Research Modules: (60 credits): 

Either  Dissertation (20,000 words) or  Practitioner Research (30 credits), Professional Study (10-12,000 words) (30 credits)

7.  Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Each module is assessed through a combination of practical written assignments (typically based on research in education settings), portfolio tasks which develop critical reflection and professional presentations.  Assignments are started during a taught module after teaching of the module has finished.

Each module is assessed by means of written assignments and portfolio tasks.  Assignments link theory and practice and include research-driven elements, as well as requiring appropriate background reading.  Portfolio tasks invite the participants to develop their capacities as learners.
