UCP Marjon is accredited by the British Council, and our courses for Teachers and Trainers are recognised by the European Union as eligible for Comenius and Grundtvig funding. Courses listed with a code in the table below appear in the Comenius/Grundtvig Catalogue.

Our trainers are experienced professionals who have taught and trained overseas and who are used to working with fellow professionals from all over the world.

Our modern teaching rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware, including digital projectors, interactive whiteboards and internet access.

Course participants have unlimited access to e-mail and the Internet, plus free membership of UCP Marjon Library.

*Subject to validation, these courses may be taken as accredited modules leading towards a Master’s degree. Tuition fees are listed in £ sterling. You can pay course fees in Euros at the exchange rate current at the time of application.

Accommodation

The accommodation costs for two weeks are £158 on campus (room only) and £254 in homestay (with half-board) - depending on availability. For full details click here.

Meals and snacks are available from a variety of outlets on campus and nearby.

Social / Cultural Visit Programme

There is an optional programme of social events and excursions. Excursions are normally £25 for a full-day, £15 for a half-day. Entry fees, where required, are not included. To find out more about our social programme please click here

Course Description

1. Trainer Development for ELT
This course focuses on the needs and interests of those involved in, or intending to be involved in, any level of teacher training, teacher education or professional development  (pre-service, in-service or in-house staff development, for example).  Its main components are Training Methods and Materials Design, Classroom Observation and Supervision and Training Course Design and Management.
The course content, typically, is as follows:
• Training Methodologies:  ways of handling group training sessions
• Training Materials:   interpretation of existing materials, and design of materials for training
• Classroom observation:  ways of observing teachers, providing feedback and assisting in development
• Training course design:  ways of designing training programmes, including evaluation and management of such programmes.

2. Language Development for Teachers
This course aims to strengthen teachers’ English Language proficiency to make them more confident users of English and more competent English teaching professionals in the classroom.  Attention will be paid to developing all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and will be focussed around various topic areas including:
• English as an International language
• Varieties of English and changes in English and English usage internationally
• The spread and use of English as a medium of instruction
• The language, forms and functions of English needed to manage classrooms
• Methodology and related professional issues (with related readings).

3. Language Awareness and Materials Development for ELT (Joint Accredited Module)
This course can be taken either as a free-standing summer programme or as an accredited module in a validated Certificate/Diploma/Masters Degree programme. 
As an accredited module, there are associated assessment requirements with on-line support.  15 credits are awarded for successful completion of each part of the module (total 30 credits).
Main content areas are as follows:
• Language Awareness (15 credits) – Exploration of systems of English (grammar, lexis, discourse); Awareness of English as an International Language; Pedagogic applications of language awareness
• Materials Development (15 credits) – Principles of materials design; process of materials development; uses of authentic materials; adaptation of existing materials including course books.
 
4.  CLIL Practice (Content and Language Integrated Learning 1) (Accredited Module)
This course can be taken either as a free-standing summer programme or as an accredited module in a validated Certificate/Diploma/Masters Degree programme. 
The module provides an opportunity to reflect on the nature of learning a content subject (such as Geography or Physics) through the medium of a second language (for example, English), and on key international trends in CLIL.
The content of the syllabus will typically include:
• Contemporary ideas on CLIL methodology
• The relevance of Social Constructivism to CLIL
• Thinking skills and task design, using problem-solving approaches
• Materials evaluation, analysis and presentation
• CLIL micro-teaching, with immediate feedback.
As an accredited module, there are associated assessment requirements with on-line support.

5. Teaching English to Young and Very Young Learners
These courses are intended for both new and practising teachers of English as a second or foreign language for younger learners, 3-11.  These may include secondary teachers of English who are starting to teach at primary level, and primary teachers of other subjects who need to teach in English.
The course can cover a variety of topics and content areas, according to the needs, interests and priorities of the participants.  These may include:
• Approaches to TEYL:  language-based learning, activity-based learning, topic-based learning
• Developing language skills and systems:  teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary and grammar (appropriate to age range)
• Story as methodology:  using, selecting and adapting stories
• Using songs, music, drama and games with children
• TEYL textbook and materials review
• Testing/assessment of young learners.

6. Language Skills for CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning 2) (Accredited Module)
This course can be taken either as a free-standing summer programme or as an accredited module in a validated Certificate/Diploma/Masters Degree programme. 
The Module considers language awareness, a key element of teachers’ professional  action and knowledge.  It includes classroom observation (actual or on video) in order to consider the role of talk in CLIL classrooms and to provide a basis for the analysis of classroom discourse and records of classroom observation.
The syllabus will typically include:
• The analysis of English systems and use in content areas such as science, maths and geography
• Collaborative problem-solving via task-based work
• Conceptualisation of language awareness
• The roles of English as an international language
• Using English for classroom management
• Working on subject-specific language and vocabulary.
As an accredited module, there are associated assessment requirements with on-line support.

7. Classroom Research and Language Assessment (Joint Accredited Module)
This course can be taken either as a free-standing summer programme or as an accredited module in a validated Certificate/Diploma/Masters Degree programme. 
As an accredited module, there are associated assessment requirements with on-line support.  15 credits are awarded for successful completion of each part of the module (total 30 credits).
• Classroom Research (15 credits) – principles and practices of classroom research; gathering and analysing classroom data; presenting and acting on research findings; classroom research and teacher development.
• Language Assessment (15 credits)  – principles and practices of language testing and assessment; Proficiency testing; classroom-based testing and assessment; test design; record-keeping and profiling.
