<>We have now expanded the main wireless infrastructure with more wireless access points. This means that you can connect to the wireless network anywhere in UCP Marjon. We are mindful that the coverage, whilst extensive, might not cover every part of UCP Marjon grounds with a strong signal. If you find that there is an area where the signal is not strong enough to connect to the Internet please contact Computing Services so we can fine tune the access points or fit more as required to provide suitable coverage. Please also note that the access points are NOT compatible with any consumer wireless system as the points MUST be managed by a specialised switch and they are therefore of no use to anyone but wireless users in UCP Marjon. Please do not remove them for any reason.Security Software needed to log onto WiFi. The Marjon WiFi network can only be accessed if you have a Marjon network account AND your machine meets minimum levels of security. All machines accessing the WiFi network are checked at least once every 30 days to ensure compliance. Operating System A machine must have at least one of the following Operating Systems which has had recent patch programs/updates applied. MS Windows XP service pack 2 or later MS Windows Vista service pack 1 MS Windows 7 Apple OS X or later but only very limited support is available. We do not support Linux or other OS systems at this time.Anti-Virus First things first, ensure you have an anti-virus program installed and running. There are many software packages available that will reduce the chance of virus attacks. Students are able to download and install a copy of Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus and anti-malware which auto updates and is FREE. Anti-virus packages must be kept up-to-date to ensure that your laptop is protected against the latest viruses. AVG and many other anti-virus packages automatically update, giving you one less thing to worry about. The following Anti Virus systems are compatible with the Marjon WiFi system checker: Sophos Microsoft Security Essentials (FREE) Norton McAffee Kaspersky AVG from Grisoft (FREE).Anti-Spyware: As well as an anti-virus package you should also have an anti-spyware program which is included in Microsoft Security Essentials (i.e. Adaware 2011, SpyBot Search and Destroy). Spyware covertly gathers information about you and sends it back to a pre-defined source over the Internet. This data is mostly used for advertising purposes but can be used for more severe attacks including data theft. Ensure that you regularly update and run an anti-spyware scan. It might also help speed up infected laptops, as the spyware often slows a machine down. The following Anti Spyware systems are compatible with the Marjon WiFi system checker:"Windows Defender" that comes built in with Vista, MalwareBytes (FREE) from malwarebytes.org, "Spybot Search and Destroy" from Safer Networking, Adaware from Lavasoft and Microsoft Security Essentials (FREE).Network Necessity: Without having both an anti-virus and anti-spyware package installed on your system, you will not be able to connect to the Marjon network. You will also be required to keep both anti-virus and anti-spyware software up-to-date with the latest versions before you can connect. The Computing Services team can loan students a USB pen drive with compatible products already on it ready to install. Every system connecting to the Marjon network will have a security scan carried out every 30 days to ensure that products are installed and up to date.
