Shibboleth (previously Athens)

Athens has changed!

The Athens Access Management System has recently been replaced by a new system called Shibboleth. This means that you do not need to register for an Athens username anymore, and any existing Athens accounts have been de-activated.This applies to all databases, the electronic journals and the e-books.

Shibboleth replaces Athens and means that you only need to use your Marjon username and password (as if you were logging onto a PC on campus or checking your emails), which means one less password for you to remember. Hopefully this will make off-campus access much simpler and easier for you.

Instead of looking for a link to 'Athens login', please look either for 'Institutional login' or 'Shibboleth login'. We are members of the UK Access Management Federation, so there may also be a link to this depending on the resource. You should then have a drop down list of different institutions, just scroll down and select 'University College Plymouth St Mark & St John'. If we are not listed under that name, please check for 'College of St Mark & St John'.

There are 3 exceptions to this new login system:

ERIC & BEI - if you require access to either the ERIC database or the British Education Index, please see the Library page of Learning Space , if you have any problems then email libraryenquiries@marjon.ac.uk or ring 01752 761145. This is a temporary arrangement, hopefully by summer 2010 both databases will be able to accept Shibboleth authentication.

A-Z electronic journals listing - when you try to access the A-Z listing from off-campus, you will immediately have a login screen. Please ignore the link underneath which says 'Athens login', as we have set up a temporary username and password. The username and password are available on Learning Space - please click on the Library tab and then look in the journals information box on the right hand side. Once you have logged in with these details, please continue as usual with your search, and if asked to log in again you will need to 'Shibboleth login'. Then you will need to enter your Marjon login details. Your username is your student number or staff login; if you are not sure what your password is, please go to the password reset section of http://www.marjon.ac.uk/email There is also a link to Computing Services if you have problems with this. Hopefully this will be a temporary arrangement and by September 2009 the A-Z listing will accept Shibboleth authentication.

Please note that any students who have just left the University College and are not returning will lose their access to electronic resources at the beginning of the next academic year in September.

Important information for CDP/GTP/UAT/PAHC students
As you do not have Marjon email addresses, unfortunately there is a delay in setting up your Shibboleth access as we need to add you on an individual basis. Please email libraryenquiries@marjon.ac.uk to let us know if you require access.
