Information for Students & Staff with Disabilities

The University College is committed to ensuring that all students and staff can make full use of its services and collections.  This guide describes the facilities and services that are available in the Main Library for people who have a disability.

Access to Buildings

The Main Library of the University College is accessible to all users. There are automatic entry doors and the two lifts provide access to the first and second floors. The Teaching Resources area on the ground floor, however, is down five steps so wheelchair access is through the 24 hour computer room in the quadrangle. There is a door leading from the computer room into the Teaching Resources area but for security reasons this has to be locked so it is necessary to request access by ringing a bell sited to the left of the door.

Emergency Procedures

In case of emergency a Klaxon will sound. Please vacate the Library by the two tower emergency exits unless you are a wheelchair user. In this case

  • DO ask someone to inform Library staff of your presence in the building
  • DO escape to one or other of the wheelchair refuges in the two towers and await rescue
  • DO NOT use the lifts, they will be immobilised
  • DO NOT allow helpers to assist you except for trained staff or the emergency service personnel

Assistive Equipment

The assistive equipment available includes: CCTV, a scanner and PC with large screen monitor, JAWS software, an induction loop at the counter, an adjustable work station, mobile steps with handrails and book rests on each floor.

The Library also stocks coloured copier paper available at 1p per sheet. Please ask at the issue desk.

All the Library staff are pleased to help you in any way they can but if you have a particular request or suggestion about the disability service within the Library please telephone 01752 636700 ext 4200
