Frequently Asked Questions

Does MARGen store my references?

No, any references you create will be forgotten once you close your browser or navigate to a different website. We strongly suggest you keep your own copy of any references you use on your own computer.


Don’t forget you can copy and paste directly between MARGen and your word processing package – it should keep any formatting (such as underlined titles) intact.

Why is the source I want to reference not available?

All systems must have some limitation, and MARGen is no different. We have tried to provide options for the most common referencing sources, but if you would like to suggest an additional option, please email LSHelp@marjon.ac.uk.

Why does my reference have strange "<ul></ul>" text in it?

This is a known issue effecting some browsers (specifically iPhone/iPad). If you are using a non-standard computer browser simply remove the strange code and instead, underline the title yourself.


For example: "(2012) <ul>Advanced thinking skills</ul>" should become "(2012) Advanced thinking skills".

Other Information

The Marjon Academic Referencing Generator was designed and developed by Adam Read (e-Learning Technologist), Helen Heywood (Academic Skills Coordinator), and Claire Stevens (Deputy Head of Library) for the University of St Mark & St John.


It is intended to assist Marjon students with their referencing, and as such, follows the Harvard conventions set out in the institution's Student Regulations Framework.
