Creative Writing offers instructional lectures, workshops and extended projects in fiction, poetry, media and drama. You will also work with well known authors spending time as writers in residence at UCP Marjon.
Core modules in Creative Writing allow you to explore a wide variety of written forms; conventions and techniques. These modules develop essential skills in creative thinking and crafting. Additional modules allow you to investigate drama, media, poetry, narrative and genre.
The choice of modules in the second year invites you to focus on particular skills and interests. Narration and the Short Story and Writing for the Stage both offer you these forms and generate portfolios of your own original writing; while simultaneously developing your awareness of the context into which your writing situates itself. Other module choices include: Drama and the Community; Romanticism; Modern Drama; Science Fiction Dystopias; Contemporary Fiction; Written Journalism and Magazine Cultures.
Specialisation in the third year similarly offers you the opportunity to further refine your writing skills. Modules include: Prose Fiction; Advanced Poetry and Writing for the Screen. Other modules available focus on broadcast journalism; poetry since the Second World War; the birth of the novel and video production. The Creative Writing dissertation (a compulsory component for those taking Creative Writing as a major subject) consists of an extended creative writing project in a form of your choice and an accompanying critical commentary.
