The Abstracts
Session 1: Integrating electronic resources into the VLE. Work in progress at Bournemouth University
There has been an explosion in the use of electronic resources by students; this existing high usage of e-resources will be intensified as virtual learning environments (VLEs) become the primary means of interaction between students and universities. The challenge facing academic libraries is to provide appropriate resources in electronic form and through interfaces meeting the expectations of the Digital Natives. This paper briefly comments upon the marketplace for e-books and reports on Bournemouth University’s innovative response to this challenge: leading a national tender not only for general collections of e-books, but also for bespoke subject collections. The focus of the paper is on integrating existing resources into the VLE and creating new resources; exploiting the VLE and federated search technology. It also reports on Bournemouth’s current Higher Education Academy-funded pathfinder project, Innovative E-Learning with E-Resources (eRes), to develop innovative pedagogic frameworks and an e-reading strategy.
Session 2: Repositories - creating, storing and loosing digital assets, Keele University
Information to follow...
Session 3: New Pedagogies – New Culture, University College Plymouth St Mark and St John
The pathfinder project, together with UCP Marjon’s laptop initiative and our latest round of teaching and learning projects provides an exciting opportunity to move our institution away from an ‘upload – download’ culture and to provide colleagues with new pedagogical opportunities in an eLearning environment. This presentation will draw upon our experiences and efforts to address this agenda and will show examples of how this has become manifest in the types of projects staff at UCP Marjon are undertaking.
Session 4: “I want to tell you a story...”, University of Gloucestershire
Whilst waiting for Claire to pick up the phone, Phil wondered how he could convince her that preparing and presenting the Pathfinder session would be ‘enhancing her professional development’.
“Hi Claire. Any ideas about what we could do for our session at UCP Marjon?”
“Although it would be good to get everyone to create their own digital story, there isn’t really enough time. Instead, I thought that we should concentrate on the process of storytelling itself and the reasons why digital storytelling has evolved as a method of encouraging student reflection. We could also show a couple of examples of our students’ work.”
“That would work,” said Phil, relieved that they might have something suitable to present to the group. “Let me know when you’ve put something together and I’ll be happy to look over it.”
As Claire put down the phone, Phil wondered how he had managed to get himself into this position … again.
