Sports Science Lab
The Sport and Health Sciences Laboratory is a specialist facility at UCP Marjon Sport within the Faculty of Sport, Media and Creative Arts. The laboratory is used in a variety of ways including teaching and research and as a facility for providing sport and health science support to clients, athletes and clubs. The laboratory is equipped with up to date testing and analysis technology supporting the sport and health science disciplines of physiology, health and exercise, nutrition, sport psychology and sports technique analysis. This includes equipment for physiological testing such as maximal aerobic and anaerobic capacity, blood lactate testing and body composition analysis; health checks and analysis: a sports psychology facility for enhancing self-awareness and mental toughness, goal setting and the development of training and competition routines; and technique analysis through the use of high speed video technology and computer imaging.
A key aim of the laboratory is to provide a venue for assessing, monitoring, advising and optimising performance from both a sports and healthy lifestyle perspective with specialist equipment and staff. It is currently used by a number of individuals for assessing, maintaining and improving sports performance through the development and regular monitoring of specific training programmes as well as fitness and health programmes. A variety of teams and individuals have used the facility for optimising performance, recovery from injury, GP referrals and health checks.
The Laboratory is also used as a venue for ‘taster sessions’ linked to a ‘Workshop for Schools’ programme. The sessions are tailored towards the GCSE, A level and BTEC PE and Sport Science curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to experience the application of the theoretical aspects of the curriculum within a controlled laboratory environment. Further workshops are offered for staff training (CPD) based around the National Curriculum for PE, health and sport science.
