Through Marjon University I was able to spend 8 months in America, studying at Bloomsburg University in Pennslyvania and working at Camp America. After completing my semester at Bloomsburg and a summer at the camp, I travelled across America and Canada visiting Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Dover, New Jersey, Washington DC, Florida, New York and many more.

My fondest memory was being invited to a friend’s parents’ house to watch the Super Bowl. There were about 30 people there and it felt brilliant to be doing something like that, experiencing it the way locals do.

Coming back to University after spending 8 months away has helped me to become more confident and independent, allowing me to network and meet with a wide variety of people. Living, studying and working within different communities forced me to get out of my comfort zone, allowing me to grow as an individual and help broaden my horizons.

Through Marjon and international study, I’ve made lifelong friends from all over the world and I feel ready for life after university.

During my course, I’ve had multiple opportunities to travel to different countries to develop my learning and expand my opportunities after university. In my first and second year of university, I travelled to Spain to climb which was offered to me as an enrichment week during my course. Shortly after this, I travelled to Iceland to help set up a place-based module with the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. As part of my dissertation, I travelled to the Dolomites in Italy, where I hiked for three weeks to collect data. In September, I went to the European Outdoor Education conference in Slovenia to help present on Augmented Reality uses in Outdoor Education.

Every traveling experience has helped me to gain a better understanding of diverse cultures and the many different perspectives of life. My trips have taught me to become more flexible and more organized than I was before. I have learnt and developed many skills through my unforgettable experiences and I am sure that these will be transferable to life after university.

Marjon and the opportunities I’ve been given here have given me a bright future.

When I was in my second year of BA (Hons) Journalism, we travelled to Belgium to take part in an Erasmus exchange project. We were working with two universities whilst we were there, one from Belgium and one from Prague. The idea behind the project was to expand our skills in live video production whilst working with foreign students.

The trip was really beneficial to me as I was working with students whose first language wasn’t English and this made it very interesting to communicate throughout the process. Now, working within a professional basketball club, we have foreign players so with the experiences I’ve had, my communication skills have improved. Working in an environment where we were tasked to create, edit and present video on the same day has also helped me to work creatively under pressure whilst meeting tight deadlines.

I'm extremely grateful for the international opportunities I had and wouldn't be in the position I am now without them.

In my second year at Marjon, studying BA (Hons) Acting, my class formed The Actor’s Wheel where we toured one of our plays internationally. We had the opportunity of taking our play on an international tour to Greece. Our show, that was developed from Greek tragedy Oedipus, then got to be performed it its homeland. It was an incredibly valuable and rewarding experience, working closely with Greek drama students and learning how they worked and studied. It was really eye opening.

The highlight of the experience was towards the end of our stay during our final performance. We were in an art gallery with a sold out audience and the play was received so well, it received a 5 minute standing ovation.

The experience was incredibly valuable and my confidence as an actor and performer grew so much. Since returning from Greece and graduating, I’ve worked a summer in France as a singer and even had small roles in Poldark and Doc Martin.

Marjon have prepared me for life.
