Marjon hosted this year's 'Beyond Horizons - Developing your future’ event on the 3 of November, and welcomed 180 students from Devon and Cornwall to find out more about careers in the outdoor sector.
Organised by the Institute for Outdoor Learning South West Region, the event aimed to inspire and motivate students for a career in the outdoor sector. Event organiser Cathy Harshaw said: "We hope to show students the many varied ways that the outdoors can be used, in education, therapy, personal development, recreation, the list goes on….and get them really excited about their own futures in this rapidly developing field."
Dr Mark Leather, Senior Lecturer and Programme Area Leader for Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning at the University said: "Events like these are important because they recognise the overlap between academic study and professional employment in this vibrant outdoor sector.”
The event, sponsored by Land and Wave, A Mind 4 Adventure, Cotswold Outdoor and The Adventure Centre, included a variety of aspects. Keynote speeches were delivered throughout the day including one by professional climber and mountaineer Callum Muskett. Workshops run by various outdoor professionals included advice and guidance on how to run your own business and get the job you want to more practical sessions including one run on the Marjon Sports Centre climbing wall. There were also a number of employers attending to recruit the next generation of outdoor professionals.
