The eagerly awaited new student bar opened its doors to a mix of ghouls, witches, zombies, DJs and local band, Rockafella, for its official Halloween launch party earlier this term, following a major five month build project.
The new lighter and brighter bar area now includes a Starbucks and is open from 8 am until 11 pm every day, providing a place where students and lecturers can meet up throughout the day and during the evening.
Elias McGill, President of Marjon Student Union comments, “It’s great to have the bar back in action and we’re really pleased with its new look and feel. The longer opening hours mean that students can enjoy the space in the day now as well, which has got them coming back for more in the evenings too!
“It’s a perfect meeting place for students who live on campus and it’s proving extremely popular with the sports clubs who drop in after fixtures on a Wednesday …..I hear it’s compulsory for the basketball players to attend!”
Popular events already held include the monthly open mic ‘Sunday Sessions’ and regular quizzes and film nights using the new 96” big screen TV. Specialist ‘cheesy’ Christmas events coming up include a ‘Christmas Jumper’ night and just last week was an Abba Tribute disco.
“We try to provide a bit of a contrast to the sort of entertainment students can access in the city centre and create a fun, relaxed atmosphere where they can really let go.”
Plans for the spring and summer include using the large new patio space and grass area for events and creating an outside seating area.
Members of the Students’ Union are also brewing up a plan for the bar to get its own signature beer on tap and are ‘working’ alongside micro-brewery Tavi-beer to prepare and test the first rough batch……we look forward to the results.
