On Friday, 28 November 2014, the University of St Mark & St John released the following statement:
"Staff and students at the University of St Mark & St John are shocked and saddened to learn of the death of one of our students, Shaun Brotherston, who was in his final year on the three-year BSc (Hons) Health, Exercise and Physical Activity programme.
"Shaun was an active and well-liked sportsman who played for the University’s first team in football. The University is a tight-knit community with sport at its heart and this tragic loss of such a young student and athlete has shocked students and staff.
"We understand that the tragic accident took place while Shaun was visiting the Netherlands with friends from Plymouth and that no other students from the University were involved.
"We are providing support for classmates and team members. There will be a book of condolences in our University Chaplaincy Centre next week and students are invited to light a candle for Shaun.
"Our deepest sympathies are extended to Shaun’s family at this extremely difficult time."
