Counselling Clinic

Counselling

The Marjon Counselling Clinic offers a safe and non-judgmental therapeutic space for clients to talk about their struggles, issues and concerns.

The majority of our counsellors are third-year students on the BSc (Hons) Counselling for the Helping Professions or MPsy Master of Psychotherapy and Counselling courses.

All our student counsellors are required to be student members of either the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). The clinic is open to all members of the public*, over the age of 18.

What is counselling?

Counselling offers a safe and non-judgmental therapeutic space for you to talk about your struggles, issues and concerns. Your counsellor will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and your relationship with others.

What you discuss during sessions will depend on your reasons for seeking counselling and what you want help with. The counselling process will be supportive and allow you to make changes in your life. A counsellor will not give you their opinions or advice or prescribe medication.

They will assist you to find your own solutions, whether that’s making effective changes in your life, finding ways of coping with your problems or accessing your inner resources.

What can counselling help with?

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Upsetting or traumatic events
  • Self-awareness
  • Recognising unhelpful patterns
  • Difficult life events
  • Low self-esteem and worth
  • Understanding yourself in the world
  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Emotional regulation
  • Bereavement and loss

Who can use the service?*

The clinic is open to all members of the public, over the age of 18. We cannot offer counselling to Marjon University staff or students. Staff can access an independent counsellor through the People Team. Students can access counselling through the Marjon Student Wellbeing and Support team.

We are unable to offer our services to those who:

  • are in acute mental health crisis
  • are not registered with a GP locally (Devon & Cornwall)
  • have current serious untreated addiction issues
  • do not have the capacity to give informed consent for counselling
  • have requirements that sit outside the expertise or capacity of the service

How many sessions do I get?

You will be offered 50-minute counselling sessions, which will be carried out face-to-face on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The number of sessions will be agreed between the counsellor, clinic manager and yourself during the first couple of weeks of counselling. This agreement will form part of a counselling contract that will be reviewed regularly by you and your counsellor. Where necessary and agreed with the counsellor and clinic manager, it may be possible to extend your contracted sessions.

How much does it cost?

Our counselling sessions operate on a 'pay as you can' basis. We suggest a donation of £15 per session. You will be able to select your chosen donation when completing our self-referral form.

Any donations beyond this amount are greatly appreciated and will be utilised to develop and widen access to the counselling clinic.

You will receive an invoice via email upon booking each session.

The clinic asks clients for at least 24 hours of prepayment to provide confirmation that a session will take place. Any non-payment of service, once agreed, or delays in the payment could result in the termination of the client's contract.

What are the clinic opening times?

MONDAY – WEDNESDAY:  9.30am – 5:00pm

Please note: we are closed on bank holidays and for a period over Christmas. We are also closed throughout August and reopen in September – our counsellors and clinic staff will do our utmost to ensure that clients are aware of upcoming closures.

Where can I park?

Clients can park in the Main Campus Car Park for up to 90 minutes for free. You will need to claim this through the JustPark app, and it’s vital that this is done on arrival. The app does not backdate, which could result in a parking charge notice being issued. Beyond the initial 90 minutes of free parking, charges are as follows:

£1.50 for 4.5 hours, £3.00 for up to 6 hours or £5 all day

The clinic aims for the time between client's arrival and departure from campus to last no longer than 90 minutes. However, in exceptional circumstances, clients are responsible for extending their parking.

Blue badge holders are entitled to free parking on main campus. If parking in a blue-badge bay, please come to the Welcome Desk on arrival, to register your vehicle. You'll need to show either your blue badge, or a photo of the front & back of your blue badge.

For any issues or parking queries, please visit the Welcome Team (main reception).

How do I find the clinic?

The Counselling Clinic is run from two hubs. You will be notified whether your counselling sessions will take place in Hub 1 or Hub 2 upon booking your sessions. Directions to our counselling hubs will also be provided upon booking your initial session. You can also find our campus map below.

How can I get in touch?

The Clinic is accessed by appointment only. If you have a query, please email counsellingclinic@marjon.ac.uk, or call us on 01752 636751.

What happens after I submit a self-referral?

When your referral is received, an assessment process will take place to identify your counselling requirements. If the service aligns with your needs, you will be sent the Counselling Contract and Clinic Information Document via email to sign and return. Once this paperwork is received, we will be in touch via your preferred contact method to book your first session.

Please note: The clinic is a part-time service. We aim to assess and respond to your referral as soon as possible. However, there may be delays during busy periods. If your referral is accepted, and we do not have any counsellors available, we will let you know and add you to our waiting list.

What happens during my first counselling session?

During the first counselling session your counsellor will discuss the counselling contract, explain their approach and how they work. Having read your initial assessment, they may then ask you to tell them a bit more about your life, why you have come to the service and what you would like to achieve from counselling.

Do I have to complete any additional paperwork?

There are some additional questionnaires to complete before your first and after your last counselling sessions which allow us to monitor both your progress throughout counselling, and our operating standards. The first questionnaire is completed when submitting your online self-referral form. Three further questionnaires will be sent via an email link after your last session. Anonymised client data will also be used to contribute to clinic-wide support research at Marjon. Clients have the option to opt of out of having their data used in clinic-wide research prior to data anonymisation taking place. This decision will not affect their access to the service. Clients will be included in research unless they explicitly choose to opt out.

Our offer of counselling is not dependent on you completing these questionnaires or consenting to the use of your questionnaire responses.

Can people with disabilities access the clinic?

We kindly request that clients share any disability/accessibility information when completing their self-referral form.

The clinic is on the first floor of the East Building. Lift access is available, and you can refer to our campus map for detailed information. For inquiries about accessibility, feel free to contact the clinic. Upon booking your initial session, we can offer additional details about our lift access and provide directions to the counselling hubs. The Clinic Manager/Deputy Manager can also be available to meet you before your session(s) to ensure you find the appropriate hub. If you need further assistance while on campus, the Welcome Desk is also at your service.

What do I do if I arrive early for my session?

We ask that you kindly refrain from entering the counselling hubs earlier than 5 minutes before your scheduled session. Where possible, we adhere to a policy of one person in and out within each counselling hub to maintain confidentiality.

If you do arrive early, there are plenty of places on campus where you can grab a drink or a bite to eat. These include the Hub restaurant, the shop, Barjon and the Grandstand Café in the Sports Centre. There are toilets situated around campus, including two gender neutral facilities. Please see our campus map below for more information or ask the Welcome Desk if you require any assistance whilst on campus.
