Plymouth Marjon University is delighted to celebrate their partnership with Plymouth Raiders Basketball Club, creating further opportunities for students to train, compete and gain valuable industry experience on campus.
Marjon and Plymouth Raiders have an established relationship, with the University providing training facilities for the club and serving as one of its principal sponsors. A number of Marjon students combine playing for the University’s BUCS basketball teams with training and competing for the Raiders in both National Basketball League Division two and three in the men's game and division 2 in the women's game.
The partnership strengthens the student experience at Marjon by giving students studying Sport Coaching, Sports Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Sport and Exercise Science, and Sports Journalism opportunities to apply their learning within a competitive basketball environment. Having the Raiders train on campus also creates a clear player pathway and allows Marjon students to access additional basketball opportunities alongside their university programme.
Marjon has a proud connection with basketball in Plymouth. Alumni associated with the Raiders include former coach Gary Stronach, alongside Jamie Burchell, Dean Williams, Rod Wellington, Deng Deng, Myron Riley, Gavin Love and Denzel Ubiaro.
Marjon Basketball has made significant progress in recent seasons. The women’s team competes in BUCS Western Tier 1, while the men’s team competes in BUCS Western Tier 2. Students benefit from regular on-campus training, strength and conditioning support, competitive fixtures and opportunities to develop within both university and community basketball.
This partnership further enhances Marjon’s basketball provision, placing student development at its heart and creating an accessible performance environment based on campus.
