Student Life

Candidates for President

Candidate Sarah Boyd's manifesto

My manifesto

Sustainability

  • Introduce compost bins on campus.
  • Bring back and maintain the vegetable patch on campus
  • Install a permanent food bin on campus, so that unwanted unperishables don't go to waste.
  • Student led sustainability with activities such as a clothes swap to tackle consumerism.

Charity and outreach

  • Creating a fund raising league for all sports clubs and societies to get involved in throughout the year - with rewards for the most successful clubs
  • Introduction of a charity and outreach committee - for students that can reach out to local and national charitees that we can volunteer/fund raiser for.

University and Union structures

Reviewing the depth of exam and coursework feedback

  • Introducing a formal process of course representative election
  • Provide students with an accessible, easy-to-read, full breakdown of where their £9,250 is going each year
  • Recognise the hard work of both course reps and officers and publicise their work.
  • Work on transparency within the student's union by posting monthly what sabbaticals are working on.

Health and wellbeing

  • Further the education on when to go to the GP, Cumberland Centre, and A&E. To ensure students get effective help in good time.
  • In light of the long wait time for counseling services at the university, introduce pop-up stalls in collaboration with student wellbeing and support to highlight the services they provide.
  • Implement a well-being advocate role within sports teams and societies.

Campaigning

Oversee a number of campaigns that tackle tough issues and raise awareness Including:

  • #Me Too - Implement on going campaign surrounding sexual assault (educating staff and students, review university processes and support)

  • #ThisGirlCan - Aims to encourage female participation in sport, celebrate each other

Candidate RON (RE-OPEN NOMINATIONS)

If you are not happy with any of the current candidates standing for election, you can vote to Re-Open Nominations (RON). RON appears on the ballot and votes for RON are counted in the same way as those for candidates. If RON is declared the winner after all votes have been counted, the election will be held again. The original candidates are allowed to run again in the new ballot, but it gives the opportunity for new candidates to run.

WHY VOTE RON?

Voters may choose to vote RON for one of the following reasons:

They do not think any of the available candidates should be elected.
They would rather have more choice and be able to select from a greater number of candidates (not a guaranteed outcome).
They have already ranked some candidates, but feel that none of the remaining candidates should be elected.
You do not need to vote for RON in an election; if you think all of the candidates are better than no candidate, you should not rank RON on your ballot.

Deputy President Candidates

Candidate Liam Williams Manifesto

I would love to see the rise of more academic societies that can bolster students' academic and professional skills development. Essentially the societies would be able to draw funding from the SU as well as Futures to help students afford a wealth of opportunities, events and resources relevant to enhancing their studies. I also see the potential for a support systems for students - such as a "buddy system" where students on the same course are paired with students in the further years of their study for optional support.

The RSA system works efficiently and meets the needs of the students on campus. A similar service for students off campus provided by a team of trained 'student assistants' would be a massive credit to those living off campus that do not feel ready or comfortable to do so and do not want/can't afford to come to campus to receive support.

I would regularly meet with the officers to discuss their aims and objectives and provide support for any project they are trying to achieve. These meetings would also allow me to share the SU directive with them to ensure that they are working in line with the SU action plan. Off the back of these meetings an update on the SU page as well as MyMarjon would be published to inform students of the current projects our officers are working on and what they have achieved already.

A majority of events hosted in Barjon are not viable options for the wider social community of students since they typically involve drinking, meaning students who live off campus cannot drive there and engage fully. A broader selection of activities on and off campus to cater for commuting or long distance learners can allow this demographic to engage in social university experiences. The inclusion of non-drinking and/or daytime events would target a slightly different demographic providing something for everyone.

Doing more for the community is a value that myself and Marjon align to. Using a very similar system to a clothing bank, we would be asking all students and alumni to donate any old sports gear they no longer wear or use. These donations would go to the "Kit Locker" where students would be able to hire equipment to use for a day - opening up more opportunities for those who want to play a sport to do so, by reducing the financial barriers to participation.

Whilst major changes to improve the functionality of Barjon as a club cannot easily be made, small improvements can be made to improve the sustainability of the venue in line with Marjon Zero. There are a number of small functional changes I would make to reduce our environmental impact as well as small improvements to improve the social event capabilities - including an enquiry to change half the taps at the bar line-up, and creating a more inclusive guide for live sport that can be shown (with an endeavour to stream BUCS Wednesday fixtures where possible).

Candidate Rebekah Fletcher Manifesto

DEEPER LOOK INTO ACCESSABILITY AT MARJON

A lift breaking or ramps not being sufficient doesn't affect someone who doesn't have a disability or accessability need. However for people that these do affect, its an everyday issue, and its causing disruption to learning. How can you be expected to attend a lecture when the only way you can get to it is via a broken lift? A look at all kinds of accessible needs (lifts, hearing loops, dimmed lights etc...) will hopefully make marjon a nicer place for everyone.

RANGE AND FREQUENCY OF EVENTS

Always a tricky one. As most of you know, MSU perminent staff and MSU Sabbs have fought with Barjon for years. I think it's time we focus on events, rather than the venue. By using Barjon for pre-Wednesday nights and Club and Society sub nights, and then working with other venues for a wider range of events, hopefully the social around Marjon will improve tenfold, keeping the use of the student bar and broadening where people go and have a good time.

MORE SUPPORT FOR PART TIME OFFICERS

One thing I wish I had done better was offer more support to the part time officers. Wit the little time they have, they can do as much or as little with their role, and with a little more direction and structure (should they want it) they could do even more amazing things to help the students and improve life at Marjon.

CAMPAIGNS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

You never know what obsiticle will be thrown in the way of students (spiking, cost of living etc... ). If elected again, id like to spend more time on campaigning throughout the year, similar to what we did recently with Neurodiversity Celebration Week. This could be done as part of the support offered to part time officers.

MSU WEBSITE UPDATE

I want to do a complete overhaul of the website, steaming information, updating images and redesigning pages and outdated parts. I would push for the Sabbs to have T4 training which would allow them to make quick, easy changes. I would also make the addition of a page for societies that are no longer running and available to "adopt", which would include academic courses which do not have a society attateched to them already.
