A big change for Marjon Student Union

Released: 29.06.18

After two years championing our students, Student Union President Elias McGill will be handing down the presidential mantle to Rhys Roberts. Elias, who studied Journalism at Marjon told us: “Being the President of the SU allows you to become a key influencer in decisions made by the University and I have been able to use this to enhance the student experience.”

Changing the academic timetable, securing funds from councillors and giving speeches were just some of the contributions Elias made to Marjon over the years. However, he won’t be leaving just yet, returning to study as one of the first MPhil students in September. You can read Elias’ blog, ‘Achievements of an SU President’ here.

Stepping up from Deputy President, Rhys Roberts will be joined by post-graduate student Laura Butler. Laura told us: “As the first post-graduate to be elected a student union member it’s obviously a fantastic confidence booster going into the year. I’m very excited to go through the journey with the new and current students and Rhys himself. It’s such an exciting time and opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”

Welcoming Laura to the Union, Rhys told us: “I’m really looking forward to working with her and helping to develop the Student Union and University in a way that will benefit all students of the future.”

The official handover will happen on June 29, coinciding with the Student Union’s 88th birthday. Originally called The Education Union, archives show that it “was formed after breakfast and looks like becoming a good thing”. How right they were!
