Student footballers celebrating a win

Plymouth Marjon University has earned 3-star status from the BUCS Football Accredited Universities programme, recognising its outstanding football provision and commitment to student sport.

Plymouth Marjon University is celebrating national recognition after being awarded the highest possible rating – 3-star status – in the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Football Accredited Universities programme. The award reflects the University’s commitment to delivering high-quality football opportunities and promoting equality of access across all levels of the game.

The BUCS accreditation showcases institutions that demonstrate excellence in areas including performance development, inclusive recreational opportunities, and workforce training within university football. Marjon’s achievement signals its place as a leader in university sport and a hub for football development.

Ella O’Neill, Student Sport and Physical Activity Manager at Marjon, shared her pride in the accomplishment:

“We are proud to have set our sights on this accreditation, moving from 2 to 3 stars this season. This is a testament to our incredible programme in partnership with Argyle Community Trust, with passionate and dedicated coaches and committed students, to the evolution of our programme.

Football is a key part of our sporting offer at Marjon – a robust programme where the results speak for themselves, and this recognition from BUCS reflects our commitment to creating an environment where students can engage to develop their skills and enjoy all levels of the game.”

Marjon’s football provision is further strengthened by its specialist academic courses designed for students aiming to build a career in the football industry, developed and delivered in close partnership with industry experts such as Argyle Community Trust and Devon FA. These include BA (Hons) Football Coaching and Development, and BSc (Hons) Football Science, where students can learn alongside their passion for football.

These programmes are supported by expert staff, access to cutting-edge facilities, and placement opportunities with professional clubs and community organisations, providing students with a competitive edge in a growing global industry.

Marjon’s football programme is built on strong foundations, offering excellent facilities, expert coaching, and inclusive pathways for both men’s and women’s football. The University’s partnership with Argyle Community Trust enhances opportunities for students, from grassroots engagement to elite performance.

This 3-star accreditation not only reinforces Marjon’s sporting credentials but also highlights its role in fostering a vibrant, supportive environment where students thrive on and off the pitch.
