Marjon to host new coach education programme

Released: 08.03.22

Plymouth Marjon University’s second year Football Coaching and Development students are organising a coach education programme in association with Devon FA and Plymouth Marjon Football Club.

The project is a coach development programme (CPD) that focuses on introducing football coaches to futsal as a training activity, and to encourage futsal participation of their teams. In addition, the CPD event will allow coaches to put into practice the training activities from the classroom and play small-sided games with their own teams against other clubs.

International football stars such as Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, & Neymar. Jr are examples of players who played and benefited from futsal from a younger age. Futsal is beneficial to a player’s development as the game is played with five players in a smaller area. It is traditionally played indoors on a hard surface like a sports hall or tennis court. Playing in tight spaces gives players more touches and allows them to be more creative, with a heavier ball that is easier to control.

The project aims to raise awareness of how futsal can help to develop young players at the foundation phase (ages 5-11). With hopes to increase participation within futsal, as well as transferring their knowledge and skills into football.

Devon FA’s Football Development Officer (Coaching), Howard Shaddick, said “Our Coaches Academy offers a diverse support offer to our coaching workforce across the county, offering CPD workshops on Youth Phases, Adult 11v11 & the Female Game.

“Working with the university, we have been able to widen our offer with this innovative project, providing coaches with CPD in futsal, & foundation phase players the opportunity to play futsal with FA tutor guidance. In turn, we have been able to give Football Development students the opportunity to plan & execute a live project & gain valuable experience in the sector.”

The programme is held at Marjon Sports Centre and runs every Sunday from 27th of February until 27th March. For further information and to book on contact coaching@devonfa.com
