The Right Reverend Nick McKinnel will be stepping down as Chancellor after a distinguished chapter of service to the University. Throughout his time as Chancellor, Bishop Nick has been a trusted ambassador, friend and inspiration to the University community.
His warmth, wisdom and deep commitment to education have made him a familiar and valued presence at graduations, celebrations and milestones throughout the years. Thousands of students have crossed the graduation stage under his stewardship, benefitting from his encouragement and genuine interest in their aspirations and achievements.
Professor Claire Taylor, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth Marjon University, said: "His kindness, humility and unwavering commitment to others have touched countless lives across our University community. He has celebrated our successes, supported us through challenges and always placed people at the heart of his service. It has been a privilege to work alongside him, and we thank him sincerely for everything he has given to Marjon."
Bishop Nick said: “It has been a great privilege to have been the inaugural Chancellor of Marjon, a university with which I have been involved in various ways since the early 1990’s. I have particularly enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm of graduation ceremonies as they celebrate the hard work and achievement of students and staff, and I am always impressed with the serious and thoughtful way in which the Vice-Chancellor and Board Members set the values and direction of the University.
“Thousands of Marjon students enrich education, healthcare, sports, business and life across the South West and beyond, and I am most grateful to have had the chance to play a part in such an ambitious and caring institution.”
As former Bishop of Plymouth and a long-standing champion of the region, he brought to the role a profound understanding of Marjon's unique character and purpose. Having served on the University's Board of Governors from 2015 to 2021 before becoming Chancellor, he played an important role in helping strengthen the University's connections with local communities, schools, churches and civic partners.
Celebrating a tenure of compassion and ambition
Bishop Nick’s tenure as Chancellor coincided with a significant period of evolution and ambition for Marjon. During these years, the University has continued to strengthen its reputation for student experience and social mobility. It has expanded its health education offer, developed major new facilities including the Marjon Health & Wellbeing Hub, invested in solar and ground source heat pumps, and launched the Marjon 2030 strategy with its bold mission to end social inequity.
Throughout these developments, he has remained a constant presence, celebrating successes, offering wise counsel and championing the University's values of humanity, ambition, curiosity and independence.
Our sincere gratitude for outstanding service
As a whole University community, we extend our deepest thanks to Bishop Nick for the dedication, generosity and integrity he has brought to the role. His contribution reaches far beyond ceremonial duties; he has helped shape the culture and spirit of the University, supporting Marjon through a period of growth and transformation while remaining focused on the success and wellbeing of students and communities.
On behalf of students, staff, board members, alumni and partners, Plymouth Marjon University wishes Bishop Nick every happiness for the future and expresses our sincere gratitude for his outstanding service. He leaves a legacy as Marjon's first Chancellor and a cherished member of the University community.
An announcement will be made in due course about his successor.
