Our Chancellor

The Rt. Rev'd Nick McKinnel is the University's Chancellor and a former Bishop of Plymouth. Prior to ordination he studied Law and worked for an overseas development charity.

The Chancellor serves as the ceremonial head of the University and plays an important ambassadorial role.  The Chancellor acts as an advocate for the University, helping to raise the University’s profile and advance its interests nationally and internationally.  They are a source of counsel to the Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the Board. The Chancellor's role carries no remuneration or executive powers.

The Rt Rev'd Nick McKinnel served as a curate in London, a university chaplain in Liverpool and as vicar to parishes in rural Devon and Plymouth city centre. 

He was consecrated as Bishop of Crediton in 2012, moving back to Plymouth in 2015 to serve as Bishop of Plymouth until his retirement in 2022.

Bishop Nick served as a Diocesan Nominated Governor on Marjon's Board from 2015 to 2021. He was appointed the University's inaugural Chancellor at the opening Graduation Ceremony in October 2021.  Nick served as High Sheriff of Devon in 2023-24.
