First year Outdoor Adventure Education students have been putting their skills into practice as part of their ‘Becoming an Outdoor Professional’ module. They welcomed Year 6 pupils from Carbeile Junior School in Torpoint to our climbing wall at Plymouth Marjon University.

Marjon’s approach to adventure education and outdoor learning centres is grounded in the concept of ‘adventure equity’. Students developed their teaching and coaching skills, while the children challenged themselves, learned new techniques and discovered the enjoyment of climbing.

The pupils shared their reflections on the day. Sonny said: “I loved the climbing wall. It was my favourite thing from the day. I want to do it again." Ellis added: "It was helpful having the students teach us."

Their Year 6 teacher, Tom James, described the impact of the experience: "The collaboration between students at university and primary school was mutually beneficial as both groups were learning in a very real and meaningful way. The day has created lasting memories for our children and allowed them to experience activities which some of them would not have the opportunity to do normally."

Our own students and staff also valued the experience. Zac, first year Outdoor Adventure Education student and founder of the Marjon Adventure Sports Society, said: "This was the best session on our course so far. Theory and practice." Outdoor Technician, Hamish Wilson, commented: "We need to do more of this. It works so well as content within modules."

A sincere thank you to the pupils and staff of Carbeile Junior School for bringing such enthusiasm and confidence to the session, and to our Outdoor Adventure Education students who approached the day with professionalism, positivity and care.
