Dylan scores his dream new role

Released: 12.08.25

Dylan Jones plays football for Marjon

From academy setback to championship pitch

PE teaching student Dylan Jones has signed a professional contract with Norwich City FC—a testament to how determination and university-level support can turn sporting dreams into reality.

Released by Exeter City’s Academy at 16, the striker didn't give up. He joined Plymouth Marjon University, training as a Secondary PE teacher while playing non-league football. His breakthrough came after standout performances with Plymouth Parkway and Marjon's first team—and a successful trial where he scored twice for Norwich's U21s against Crystal Palace.

“Marjon’s Football programme helped my recent success in many way,” said Dylan. “The opportunities you get to train three times a week and in games give you plenty of time to improve… the strength and conditioning offered is a massive help… you build great relationships with staff and teammates… a healthy environment which allowed me to strive and show my footballing ability.”

Balancing Academics and Athletic Success

Off the pitch, Dylan studied BEd Physical Education, part of a course with a 97% positivity rate in the 2025 National Student Survey. As a BUCS league-winning player, he earned Fresher of the Year, became top scorer, and helped Marjon lift a League and Cup double in his first year.

Marjon’s decade-long partnership with Plymouth Argyle Community Trust also provides valuable industry placements and community project experience.

Darrel Harris, Head of Football at Plymouth Marjon University, said: “Dylan is an exceptional young man, a very talented player and an excellent example of never giving up on your dream… The odds at getting to a professional are so slim these days, and I cannot wait to see him develop even further in his career.”

A Proven Launchpad for Talent

Marjon combines elite coaching, personalized training, and top facilities with academic excellence. In the 2025 NSS, the BA Football Coaching & Development scored 96% positivity, and BSc Sport Rehab & Conditioning achieved 100%.

Dylan now joins a growing list of Marjon athletes who’ve debuted on the professional stage—including footballer Jasmine Read, swimmer Ben Proud, rower Helen Glover, and diver Sarah Barrow.

Plymouth Marjon University is rated Gold overall and for student experience in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023.
