Who are we?
The Student Life Officers are your first point of contact for advice and support and are on hand to assist with all aspects of student welfare. The Student Life Officers are based in the Student Wellbeing & Support team.
What the Student Life Team can do:
- We can support, signpost, listen and provide a safe space for all students. Our services are confidential, and we do not share information about students without discussing this with them first.
- We work with students on all manner of wellbeing issues, such as mental health, adjusting to university life, signposting to specialist services, healthy coping strategies etc.
- We can provide short-term support for low level mental health and wellbeing concerns such as anxiety or low mood. We focus on developing coping strategies and identifying appropriate long-term support.
- We can support students to liaise with other services both internally and externally to Marjon. We work closely with the Disability Inclusion Advice Service, Student Funding Team and Academic Advice Team at Marjon to provide a wide range of support.
- We can help to mediate flat disagreements/disputes.
- We support Care Leavers and estranged students.
- We organise events for students to enhance their student experience and raise awareness of issues relating to student life.
- We are part of the out-of-hours service, alongside the Resident Student Assistants (RSAs) and Campus Security, providing emergency support to resident students outside normal working hours.
What the Student Life team are unable to do:
- We are not clinicians, counsellors or therapists, however we can signpost to these services where appropriate.
- We are unable to offer mental health diagnoses, though we can signpost to more specialist support where appropriate.
- We do not have an unlimited capacity; you can use our booking platform to book an appointment with us.
- We don’t offer long term interventions or support, but we will help you to find suitable long-term support if you need it.
- We are not a mental health crisis service, but we can signpost you to appropriate crisis services.
- We do not force students to engage with our service, it is up to you whether you would like to work with us.
- We are unable to communicate with parents/carers without written permission from you (unless we have reason to believe you are at risk of significant harm).
