Supporting You: Preventing and Responding to Harassment and Sexual Misconduct

At Plymouth Marjon University, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful and supportive community for all students. This page outlines how we protect and support students in line with the Office for Students (OfS) registration condition E6, which requires universities to take all reasonable steps to prevent and respond to harassment and sexual misconduct.

What Do We Mean by and Sexual Misconduct?

Harassment and sexual misconduct are defined within our Student Misconduct Procedure as behaviours that are unwanted, offensive, intimidating or distressing. This can include:

  • Sexual harassment (Equality Act 2010)
  • Sexual assault and rape (Sexual Offences Act 2003)
  • Unwanted sexual advances
  • Intimidation in exchange for sexual favours
  • Sharing explicit images without consent (Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015)

Reporting Concerns

If you are a student and wish to report an incident, please complete this form, which can be accessed through your student account on MyMarjon.

If you are a staff member and wish to report an incident with your contact details, please email the People Team at peopleteam@marjon.ac.uk A member of the team will then contact you directly.

Both teams provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space, and can support you in accessing the most appropriate services.

Reporting Anonymously
While anonymous reports are possible, providing your contact details allows a staff member to speak with you in confidence, offer guidance, and connect you with the right support.

Getting Support

We understand these experiences can be distressing. Whether you choose to report an incident or not, we’re here for you.

You can speak confidentially with our Student Wellbeing and Support Advisors.

Find out more on the Student Wellbeing and Support pages of the MyMarjon portal.

If you are facing an allegation, you will be offered named support and guidance throughout the process and can also access help via the Marjon Students’ Union.

How We Investigate Reports

We take all reports seriously and follow clear procedures:

  • Reports involving students are addressed under the Student Misconduct Procedure
  • Reports involving staff are addressed under the University's Investigation Policy and Staff Disciplinary Policy ad Procedure. Investigators receive training and support to be able to appropriately investigate these matters.

Both policies ensure fair investigation, outlining steps, timescales, outcomes, and appeal rights.

Confidentiality and Information Sharing

We handle disclosures with care. In most cases, information is kept confidential. However, where there’s a risk of harm, we may need to share information with relevant University teams or external services.

  • Data Protection Policy
  • Student Data Protection Statement
  • Safeguarding Policy (Children and Adults at Risk)

When a student makes a report, we aim to keep them informed about the outcome where possible. A protocol between our Student Wellbeing and Support Services and the People Team ensures transparency while respecting privacy.

Student and Staff Training

For Students:

All students are encouraged to complete a short online course that covers:

  • Understanding consent
  • How to be an active bystander
  • What constitutes sexual misconduct
  • Where to find support

These key messages are also reinforced through induction sessions and embedded in campaigns and other activities throughout the year.

For Staff:

A new staff training programme launches in 2025/26 and will be mandatory for all staff. In addition:

  • Awareness sessions run year-round, with the content and effectiveness of sessions being evaluated.
  • Specialist training is provided to wellbeing advisors, liaison officers and staff handling investigations who are the staff most likely to be involved in receiving disclosures about incidents of harassment and/or sexual misconduct.
  • Bespoke training sessions can be requested by teams
  • All training will recognise freedom of speech principles.

Personal Relationships Between Staff and Students

To prevent conflicts of interest or abuse of power, our Personal Relationships Policyprohibits intimate relationships between staff and students. Any pre-existing relationships must be declared and managed transparently.

What We're Doing to Make a Difference

We are taking active steps to ensure our campus is a safe space:

  • Collecting feedback: Student and staff training includes feedback to improve our programmes.
  • Involving students: We work closely with Marjon Students’ Union to update our policies, with students represented on key approval committees.

No to NDAs

We are proud to have signed the Can’t Buy My Silence Universities Pledge, which bans the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in cases of sexual harassment or misconduct. The OfS also prohibits NDAs in these situations from September 2024.
