New BSc (Hons) Business course inspires entrepreneurs of the future

Released: 10.12.17

The Programme Leader for the new BSc (Hons) Business course, Dr Sarah Preedy, is calling on entrepreneurs of the future to sign up and put their business ideas into action together with any Marjon alumni who are willing to share their enterprise success stories.

The new three year BSc (Hons) Business course has been specifically designed by programme leader, Senior Lecturer in Business and Enterprise, Dr Sarah Preedy, to give students the practical entrepreneurial and enterprise skills they need to develop, set up and run their own business

Sarah, who also successfully runs her own business explains, “With SMEs making up over 98% of the businesses in the South West, helping students to develop and test their enterprise skills is essential for them to play a significant role in stimulating our local economy.

“The course content provides a solid foundation in essential business skills and practical application, and will certainly equip graduates for a whole range of future business scenarios, including going it alone.”

Extra-curricular support will also play an important role in the course, including link-ups with local successful start-ups and visits from local and national entrepreneurs who will act as mentors and coaches for students. Access to business funding via business ideas competitions is also available and students from any course at Marjon are encouraged to apply.

Sarah adds, “The nature of education is changing from simply passing on knowledge to facilitating students in a way which supports and allows them to hone their skills set in a practical manner.

“Our aim is to provide a wide range of support for our enterprising students, both from the business community and from experts in enterprise. Students will be able to sign up for workshops and work closely alongside business people and take on project consultancy roles whenever possible.

“Ultimately we hope to provide a business incubation space on-campus where enterprises set up by students can continue to operate and grow with continuing support from us.”

Any Marjon alumni or local businesses who would be interested in sharing their entrepreneurial experiences with students should contact Sarah Preedy at  spreedy@marjon.ac.uk
