Plymouth Marjon University announces new Chair of Board of Governors

Released: 08.05.25

Professor Mark Llewellyn, Chair of the Board of Governors

Plymouth Marjon University today announces a change in the leadership of its Board of Governors. Graham Raikes, MBE, will retire as Chair of the Board on 11 July 2025, following eight years of outstanding service. He will be succeeded by Professor Mark Llewellyn, who will assume the role of Chair on 12 July 2025.

Graham Raikes joined the Board in 2017 and was appointed Chair the following year. During his tenure, he has led the Board with distinction, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the University’s mission and community. His leadership has spanned a transformative period for Marjon, including navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, advancing sustainability initiatives through the University’s Marjon Zero project, expanding into health education, and overseeing the development of the new Marjon Health & Wellbeing Hub, supported by nearly £6 million in grant funding.

In addition to leading on the recruitment of the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Claire Taylor, and her predecessor, Graham has made consistent contributions across a range of governance committees. His exceptional attendance record speaks to his tireless dedication, offered on a fully voluntary basis.

Incoming Chair Professor Mark Llewellyn brings a wealth of experience in both higher education and governance. He is currently Professor of English Literature and Head of School at Cardiff University, a Fellow of the English Association, and Chair of the Local Governing Board of Whipton Barton Federation. Previously, Mark served as Director of Research at the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Mark joined Marjon’s Board of Governors in 2023 and has already chaired and supported a number of committees. His appointment followed a thorough process led by the Governance & Nominations Committee and was endorsed by the Board in May 2025.

The University looks forward to working with Professor Llewellyn as it advances the goals of Marjon 2030, a strategy focused on growth, sustainability, and student success.
