Additional costs for BSc (Hons) Psychotherapy and Counselling students

Personal therapy

Owing to the nature of this degree it is likely to impact upon you at a personal level.  If you are seeking to become a counsellor/psychotherapist there is an ethical duty to aspire towards being psychologically more self-aware than that of the general population.  As such, you may need to seek such support whilst undertaking this programme of study.  Whilst there is a counselling service available at the University you may choose to seek this privately for which there would be fees.

Consultative or clinical supervision

There is the possibility, depending on the placement you secure in your third year for there to be supervision costs incurred as some placements do not cover this cost.  You can expect these fees to be in the region of £40-60/hour.  If you are considering becoming a registered member with a professional organisation you will need to be supervised in accordance with their ethical codes, which would normally be a minimum of 1.5 hours per month.

Travel to placements

There may be costs associated with the travel to placements.

Professional fees

Professional membership and Professional Indemnity Insurance cover may be required for the third year placement depending upon where you obtain a placement.

Example fees:

  • British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy – Student membership = £80 per annum
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance = circa £70 per annum
