  • Explore your passion for inspiring people to succeed in a sporting environment: Sports Coaching degree. Our programme enables you to develop expertise in coaching underpinned by an in depth understanding of coaching techniques, learning processes, sport analysis, and sport science. The University’s productive links with professional sports clubs, as well as elite and community sports programmes in Plymouth and beyond, provides you with numerous opportunities to develop your coaching in real-world settings. Our Sports Coaching degree prepares you to work, not only as a coach, but also in a range of roles related to coaching, teaching, and instructing in sporting contexts.

The University provides world-class sports facilities for you to develop and apply your knowledge of coaching practice. You will also receive the opportunity to undertake a 'Work-based Learning' placement in an environment of your choice. This practical learning will be underpinned by completing modules such as Sport Coaching and the Coaching Process, Coaching Theory and Practice, and Sports Science for Sport and PE.

Your learning will also be supported by lecturing staff holding the highest industry level coaching awards including a UEFA A license in football, and staff tutors in hockey and volleyball, and who are currently coaching in a range of organisations such as professional clubs and schools.

On graduating, you will be equipped to progress into a wide range of sport-related careers, including coaching, physical education teaching, sport development and sport science support. The programme still embraces the synthesis between coaching and teaching, and celebrates the links. Students enjoy a well-rounded, dual-focused sports degree that equips them with endless practical skills which will pave the way to a successful career, whichever route they choose. Sport Coaching graduates currently work as coaches in professional sport, sport development coordinators, PE and primary school teachers, further education lecturers, and armed forces personnel.

Course Leader

My name is Kelvin Kirk, and having started as a PE teacher, I now head up this course having taught in university for nearly 20 years. During this time I progressed up through the coaching ranks of volleyball to become a Coaching Staff Tutor, awarding coaching qualifications. More recently, these generic coaching skills have been transferred to junior football as I now coach at under 12 level. I believe this wealth of experience and real-world knowledge will be of great advantage to my students’ learning experience. In addition to my sporting passions I am particularly interested in the areas of primary PE and the increasing use of modern technology in enhancing PE.
