MATRIX STANDARD

Student Support go the "extra mile"

Staff in Student Support have been described by students as "friendly and welcoming; non-judgemental and willing to go the extra mile" in a glowing report following their re-accreditation to a prestigious national quality standard for information, advice and guidance services.

In order to achieve success against the Matrix Standards, Student Support staff (Academic Information & Guidance, Counselling & Well-being, Disability Inclusion & Advice Service (DIAS), Out of Hours team and Student Funding Advice) were subject to a rigorous review process over three days. The external assessor met with a wide range of service delivery staff, students, university colleagues and external partners; reviewed information provision, including on-line resources and hard-copy materials and conducted an extensive document review of policies, procedures and guidelines.

Many students commented that without Student Support they would have had to leave their course and some said that the experience of Student Support was instrumental to their decision to come to the university.

Key strengths identified include:

  • "needs led and student focussed"
  • "proactive, open and professional"
  • "staff have a wealth of knowledge and information about services and agencies to whom to signpost and refer students"

Head of Student Support, Jenny Barnicoat, said: “We aim to provide an integrated service that supports students in their studies and helps them reach their potential. The whole team is really proud of gaining re-accreditation yet again. Student Support has been Matrix accredited for 10 years now, indicating the consistently high standard of support for our students."
